چکیده

161 HydrocepHalus is the most common neurosurgical disorder in children, with rates of 3–5 per 1000 live births in developed countries3 and estimates in sub-Saharan Africa of more than 100,000 cases per year.28 The majority of infant hydrocephalus cases in East Africa appear to be postinfectious,27 related to preceding neonatal infections, and are thus preventable if the microbial origins and routes of infection can be better understood. Here we show that climate is an important factor in driving the infections that lead to PIH.

Interdisciplinary care for children with spina bifida in East and Southern Africa

The prevalence of newborns spina bifida and hydrocephalus in low and middle income economies (LMIE) is higher than in high income economies (HIE). In this article, the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (IF) reflects on its findings of 20 years of work in East and Southern Africa. Active parent involvement in care and interdisciplinary approach are crucial for a success...

Enso Signals in East African Rainfall Seasons

The evolutions of ENSO modes in the seasonal rainfall patterns over East Africa are examined in this study. The study covers the period 1961–1990. Both rotated empirical orthogonal function (EOF) and simple correlation analyses were used to delineate a network of 136 stations over East Africa into homogeneous rainfall regions in order to derive rainfall indices. Time series generated from the d...

Access to Risk Mitigating Weather Forecasts and Changes in Farming Operations in East and West Africa: Evidence from a Baseline Survey

Unfavorable weather currently ranks among the major challenges facing agricultural development in many African countries. Impact mitigation through access to reliable and timely weather forecasts and other adaptive mechanisms are foremost in Africa’s policy dialogues and socio-economic development agendas. This paper analyzed the factors influencing access to forecasts on incidence of pests/dis...

Western Indian Ocean marine and terrestrial records of climate variability: a review and new concepts on land–ocean interactions since

We examine the relationship between three tropical and two subtropical western Indian Ocean coral oxygen isotope time series to surface air temperatures (SAT) and rainfall over India, tropical East Africa and southeast Africa. We review established relationships, provide new concepts with regard to distinct rainfall seasons, and mean annual temperatures. Tropical corals are coherent with SAT ov...

The Rainfall Annual Cycle Bias over East Africa in CMIP5 Coupled Climate Models

East Africa has two rainy seasons: the long rains [March–May (MAM)] and the short rains [October– December (OND)]. Most CMIP3/5 coupled models overestimate the short rains while underestimating the long rains. In this study, the East African rainfall bias is investigated by comparing the coupled historical simulations from CMIP5 to the corresponding SST-forced AMIP simulations. Much of the inve...
